“AAC includes all of the ways we share our ideas and feelings without talking. We all use forms of AAC every day. [...] People with severe speech or language problems may need AAC to help them communicate. Some may use it all of the time. Others may say some words but use AAC for longer sentences or with people they don’t know well.”
- American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
AAC systems can take many forms. They can be low-tech, paper-based communication systems, or they can be high-tech computers. Some can be bought on your own, and some can be purchased through your insurance company. The right type of AAC system is different for every child, and the purpose of this evaluation is to find what kind of system is best for yours.
It’s important to know that using an AAC system does NOT mean giving up on verbal language. In fact, there is a wealth of research showing that using AAC provides benefits to the development of communication, including verbal language. You’ll find more information on dispelling this and other AAC myths here: https://www.smalltalkspeechtherapy.com.au/aac-myths-busted/
Over the course of the AAC evaluation, the evaluator, a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in Augmentative/Alternative Communication, will get to know you and your child, explain and explore some AAC options, and help to determine the best fit for an AAC system. One or more AAC systems may be trialed at home, to gather more data as needed.
A recommendation for an AAC system will be provided through a formal evaluation. This evaluation may support you and your child in getting an AAC system through your school district or insurance company. Consultation sessions thereafter provide strategies for successful implementation of the AAC system, for both you and your child’s treating speech therapist.
Here's a summary of the process:
Please note: We are a private pay practice and while we do not accept insurance we do support families with the documentation needed to submit for out of network reimbursement for the evaluation and consultation sessions. We encourage families to reach out to their insurance companies to understand your coverage and what is required.
